Bratislava, Slovakia
The third stop on our 2012 European Delivery Adventure was Bratislava, Slovakia.
Bratislava is a small city and pretty much everything can be seen in 1-2 days.
We stayed at Marrol’s Boutique Hotel located in the Old Town.
We dropped off our bags and started exploring.
The Church of St. Elizabeth is more commonly known as the Blue Church.
Anyone want to guess why?
St. Martin’s Cathedral is the largest and one of the oldest churches in Bratislava.
The cathedral dates all the way back to the beginning of the 14th century.
Construction continued for over a 100 years and the church was consecrated in 1452.
Bratislava Castle sits on a hill overlooking the city.
The exterior isn’t as opulent as some of the other castles we’ve seen on this trip.
I think it’s much prettier at night.
Grassalkovich Palace is the residence of the president of Slovakia.
The palace was built in 1760 for Antal Grassalkovich, a Hungarian noble.
Its once private gardens are now a beautiful public park.
The Nový Most (New Bridge) and the UFO Observation Deck were my favorite sights.
The bridge has four upper lanes for cars, and lanes for pedestrians beneath the roadway on both sides.
The UFO Observation Deck is a little over 300 feet above the Danube River and offers a bird’s eye view of the city.
The highlight of Bratislava was , a charming restaurant tucked away in the Old Town.
We loved it so much, we ate there both days.
Their menu offers several local specialties to choose from.
A couple of our favorites were the Slices of Veal with Leek and Rosemary in a Potato Pancake:
And a classic Slovak dish, Bryndzové Halušky:
Gnocchi with Slovak Sheep Cheese and Bacon.
The Escargot was out of this world, too.
We walked along the Danube River on our last night and then headed towards Austria the next morning.
We dropped our car off at Auto Service Wien in Vienna and they took care of shipping our car to the States.
In a week, we drove through Germany, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria for a total of 1420 km.
As our car started its journey home, we jumped on the train and headed to our next destination.
Prague!
One of my favorite cities in the world.
