A Day in Dubai
In November 2013 we spent a day in Dubai, the largest city in the United Arab Emirates.
Well, two nights and one afternoon.
Our final destination was New Zealand, but we were able to make stops in Dubai on the way there and the way home.
We stayed both nights at Barjeel Heritage Guest House located on the waterfront in Heritage Village.
We chose to stay in Heritage Village instead of downtown because we wanted to get a feel for Dubai’s traditional culture, lifestyle, and architecture.
That night we ate dinner at Kan Zaman, a restaurant along the waterfront.
The table next to ours had the Royal Kan Zaman Grill Stand, so we pointed to it and ordered one, too.
It was skewers of lamb tikka, shish tawook, lamb chops, and a few other kebobs served over hot coals.
Admittedly, it wasn’t the best food to be found in Dubai, but it was exactly what we needed that night: good food in a relaxed setting.
The next morning we flew from Dubai to Sydney and then on to Auckland.
After a week in New Zealand, we flew back to Dubai and arrived at the Barjeel Heritage Guest House about 1:30 AM.
We slept for a few hours and woke up to a gorgeous Dubai morning.
After breakfast, we took the train to Downtown Dubai.
The Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping mall with 1200 shops, an olympic-sized ice rink, a water zoo, and an aquarium.
A woman asked us if we wanted to go into the Dubai aquarium and then handed us a 2 for 1 coupon that expired that day.
Why not.
It ended up being pretty cool!
The ticket also included the water zoo:
This guy was my favorite:
We made our way outside to the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.
It is 2,716.5 feet tall and more than 160 stories.
It’s so tall that it is really difficult to photograph the whole thing.
We kept walking back . . . back . . . further back . . .
And you don’t realize the enormity of the skyscraper until you compare it to the other not-so-small skyscrapers next to it.
Check out this video I took:
Unfortunately, our time in Dubai ran out and it was time to head back to the airport.
We knew this wouldn’t be our only trip to Dubai so we didn’t kill ourselves trying to see everything.
The Burj Khalifa was what I came to see this time and I absolutely loved it!
I can’t wait to go to the top on our next visit.
Until next time, Dubai!
